Before spending a single rupee on MBBS abroad, every Indian student must understand the NMC (National Medical Commission) rules for studying medicine abroad. These rules determine whether your foreign medical degree will allow you to practice in India — and violating them, even unknowingly, can cost you your entire investment and your medical career.
This guide explains every NMC rule for MBBS abroad in 2026 in plain, simple language. No legal jargon — just what you actually need to know.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is India’s apex regulatory body for medical education and practice, replacing the old Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2020. NMC sets all rules for who can practice medicine in India — including students who study MBBS abroad and return to India.
If you study at a university not recognised by NMC, or if you violate NMC’s guidelines during your study abroad, your foreign MBBS degree will not allow you to practice medicine in India. Period. This is why NMC rule compliance is the single most important thing to verify before applying.
As per NMC’s Eligibility Certificate regulations (updated 2024), all Indian citizens who wish to study primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) abroad must have qualified NEET. The minimum NEET qualification required is:
Any consultancy or university claiming you can go for MBBS abroad without NEET is either uninformed or deliberately misleading you. The NMC does not recognise degrees from students who did not clear NEET, regardless of the university’s own recognition status.
NMC maintains an official list of recognised foreign medical universities. Only degrees from universities on this list are valid for NExT eligibility and Indian medical practice. You can verify any university at nmc.org.in. If a university is not on this list, studying there — regardless of cost, location, or any other factor — will not allow you to practice in India.
Doctor’s Direction verifies every university recommendation against the current NMC list. We only recommend NMC-approved, WHO-listed institutions.
The NExT (National Exit Test) is a mandatory licensing exam for all foreign-trained Indian medical graduates. From the 2024-25 academic year onwards, all students returning from MBBS abroad must clear NExT to obtain an Indian medical licence. NExT has two parts:
Both parts must be cleared to receive the Indian medical licence and register with NMC for practice. Doctor’s Direction provides NExT preparation guidance to all returning students.
Before commencing medical studies abroad, Indian students must obtain an Eligibility Certificate from NMC India. The EC confirms that the student meets all NMC eligibility criteria — NEET qualification, academic eligibility, and the choice of an NMC-recognised university. Doctor’s Direction guides all students through the EC application process as part of the admission process.
The foreign MBBS degree must cover a minimum prescribed duration as per NMC guidelines — typically 54 months (4.5 years) of academic study plus internship. Students who leave early, transfer programmes, or do not complete the full prescribed duration at the enrolled university risk NMC non-recognition of their degree.
Go to nmc.org.in and check the list of recognised foreign medical universities. Doctor’s Direction cross-checks every university recommendation against this live list. If you have been shown a university by any consultancy, verify it at nmc.org.in before paying any money.
You will not be eligible to appear for the NExT exam, will not receive an Indian medical licence, and will not be able to practice medicine in India. You will have spent ₹15–40 lakhs on a degree you cannot use professionally in your own country. This is the worst-case MBBS abroad outcome — and it is entirely preventable by checking NMC recognition before applying.
NExT is designed as a standardised licensing exam — not an impossibly difficult barrier. Students from top NMC-approved universities who follow structured preparation pass at competitive rates. Doctor’s Direction provides NExT preparation guidance to all returning students as part of our ongoing support.
