Can I Do PG in India After MBBS Abroad? NEET PG Rulyi es for Foreign Medical Graduates (2026)
Before parents in Gujarat agree to send their child abroad for MBBS, one question almost always comes up in our Ahmedabad office: can I do PG in India after MBBS abroad? Parents want to know whether the door to MD or MS in India stays open, or whether a foreign degree limits their child to an MBBS-only career.
The short answer is yes. A student who completes MBBS from an NMC-compliant foreign university can sit for NEET PG and compete for the same MD, MS and DNB seats as Indian graduates. But there are clear steps to complete first. This guide from Doctor’s Direction, an MBBS abroad consultancy in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, explains each step, the timeline, and the Gujarat-specific points families should know.
Yes, PG in India Is Possible After MBBS Abroad
A foreign medical graduate (FMG) can apply for NEET PG once they have:
- A primary medical qualification that meets NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021
- Passed the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) conducted by NBEMS
- Registered with the NMC or a State Medical Council (for example, the Gujarat Medical Council)
- Completed the 12-month internship in India, or will complete it by NBEMS’s cut-off date
Once these are done, NEET PG treats the FMG like any other MBBS graduate. The rank decides the seat, not the country of the degree.
NEET PG Eligibility for Foreign Medical Graduates – Step by Step
Step 1: Complete MBBS from an NMC-Compliant University
Everything depends on this first step. The NMC’s FMGL Regulations require a course of at least 54 months, a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, English-medium teaching, and the right to practise as a doctor in the country that awarded the degree. If the programme fails any of these conditions, the student cannot register in India, and PG is not possible either. Our NMC rules for MBBS abroad guide covers every condition.
Step 2: Clear the FMGE
FMGE is held twice a year (June and December) by NBEMS. It is the licensing exam that allows an FMG to register in India. NMC has postponed the planned NExT exam, so FMGE remains the route for now. The FMGE pass rate is low (29.54% for Russia graduates in 2024), so preparation must begin during the MBBS, not after it.
Step 3: Complete the 12-Month Internship in India
After passing FMGE, the student gets provisional registration and completes a 12-month Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) at an NMC-approved hospital in India. Medical colleges across Gujarat, including government and GMERS colleges, take FMG interns through the state’s allotment process. Students who missed in-person training during their course (for example, online classes during COVID) may be asked to complete a longer internship under NMC’s rules.
Step 4: Get Permanent Registration
After the internship, the student applies for permanent registration with the State Medical Council or NMC. A Gujarat student would normally register with the Gujarat Medical Council. This registration is one of NEET PG’s core eligibility conditions. The full licensing path is explained in how to practise in India after MBBS abroad.
Step 5: Appear for NEET PG
NEET PG is conducted by NBEMS once a year. For NEET PG 2026, the exam was held on 30 August 2026, and the internship had to be completed on or before 30 September 2026. Dates change every year, so always check the NBEMS information bulletin.
Timeline: From MBBS Abroad to a PG Seat in India
| Stage | Typical Duration | What Happens |
| MBBS abroad | 6 years | Course plus internship at the foreign university |
| FMGE | June or December session | Licensing exam in India; results in about a month |
| Internship in India | 12 months | CRMI at an NMC-approved hospital |
| Permanent registration | 1–2 months | State Medical Council or NMC |
| NEET PG + counselling | Next exam cycle | MCC (All India) and state counselling |
Students who prepare for FMGE and NEET PG together can save a full year. The syllabus overlaps heavily, since both exams test the MBBS curriculum.
Which PG Seats Can a Foreign Medical Graduate Get?
| Seat Type | Open to FMGs? | Notes |
| All India Quota (50% of government seats) | Yes | Through MCC counselling on NEET PG rank |
| Deemed & central universities | Yes | 100% through MCC counselling |
| DNB seats | Yes | NBEMS DNB seats through NEET PG counselling |
| INI-CET (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS) | Generally yes | Separate exam; check the current prospectus for FMG conditions |
| Gujarat state quota | Depends on domicile | Check ACPGMEC rules each year (see below) |
| Private college management / NRI quota | Yes | Higher fees |
Can a Gujarat Student Get Gujarat State Quota PG After MBBS Abroad?
This is the most common follow-up question from Gujarat families, and it needs an honest answer. Gujarat’s PG admissions (through ACPGMEC) follow domicile-based rules for state quota seats. In recent years, eligibility has generally depended on either completing MBBS from a Gujarat university or being a Gujarat domicile who studied Class 10 and 12 in the state.
How these rules apply to foreign medical graduates is not always spelled out clearly, and they can change from year to year. Our advice:
- Keep your child’s Gujarat domicile documents and Class 10 and 12 certificates from Gujarat safe; they may matter later.
- Register with the Gujarat Medical Council after the internship.
- Check the current year’s rules on the official Gujarat PG admission website (medadmgujarat.org) before counselling.
- Plan for All India Quota, deemed universities and DNB too, so state quota is a bonus rather than the only option.
Does a Foreign MBBS Degree Put You at a Disadvantage in NEET PG?
In the exam itself, no. NEET PG ranks candidates on their score. There is no separate merit list or penalty for foreign graduates. Many FMGs have secured clinical branches like medicine, paediatrics and radiology through NEET PG.
The real disadvantages are elsewhere:
- Time: FMGE and the Indian internship add 1–2 years compared with an Indian MBBS graduate.
- Preparation habits: students who study only for university exams abroad struggle with Indian MCQ-based exams.
- Clinical language: students who cannot talk to patients abroad learn less in clinical years. This matters a lot in Russia; see our MBBS in Russia pros and cons guide.
All three can be fixed with the right university choice and early, disciplined preparation.
Which Country Is Best If Your Goal Is PG in India?
If PG in India is the long-term goal, choose a university, not just a country, using these filters:
- FMGL compliance: course length, English medium and internship structure that meet NMC rules
- FMGE track record: in 2024, Georgia (35.66%) and Russia (29.54%) graduates performed better on average than Kazakhstan (25.13%) and Kyrgyzstan (25.05%) graduates
- Clinical exposure: large teaching hospitals and real patient contact
- Indian-pattern coaching: universities where seniors and coaching support for FMGE/NEET PG are available on campus
Compare the main options in our country guides: MBBS in Russia, MBBS in Georgia and MBBS in Kazakhstan.
Tips to Prepare for NEET PG While Studying Abroad
- Start an FMGE/NEET PG question-bank from the second year, alongside university studies.
- Follow Indian standard textbooks for core subjects, not only university notes.
- Take one subject-wise mock test every month from the third year.
- Learn enough of the local language to take part fully in clinical postings.
- Use the final year to revise the full syllabus, so FMGE is cleared in the first attempt.
